Carpooling Quietly Booms in San Francisco - an interesting article about "casual carpool" and wondering if the Bay Area's grassroots solution to traffic can go global>

Vancouverites: Support Media Democracy! - they're asking people to show up at the BC Court of Appeal on Monday morning in support of Adbusters’ lawsuit against Canwest Global. I'm not sure it makes much sense filing a lawsuit against private broadcasters, but this is what they say:
McDonald’s can go on CBC Newsworld and tell us how great their Big Macs are, but Adbusters can’t buy airtime to point out that 50% of the calories in a Big Mac come from fat. The automobile manufacturers can buy as much time as they want to tell us how sexy their cars are, but Greenpeace is not allowed on to point out that the personal automobile is one of the primary causes of climate change. Every ad on TV glorifies consumption and tells us we can be happy if we buy things, but a Buy Nothing Day TV spot is not allowed on.

This lack of democracy on the public airwaves is what’s at stake in a legal action that’s going to be fought in the B.C. Supreme Court this Monday. Come to the courtroom and join people who are interested in fighting for the right to walk into their local TV station, put some money on the table and buy some airtime for some message that they believe in. Come and meet us there. Let’s fill the courtroom and win this battle for the public airwaves.

One Week - Free Screenings - free movie screenings of One Week. The synopsis:
When a young man is confronted with his mortality, he takes a cross-country road trip on a vintage motorcycle. One Week tells the story of Ben Tyler (Joshua Jackson), in his mid-twenties, who flees from the confines of his life—an impending marriage, a job he’s not entirely happy with and a recent diagnosis—in order to attempt to live more fully. What starts off as an ill-defined venture soon morphs into a quest for the West Coast.

Fidelity

Courage Campaign - an online organizing network that empowers nearly 400,000 grassroots and netroots activists to push for progressive change in California. An excerpt:

Today we are proud to debut "Fidelity", to put a face on the 18,000 couples facing potential forcible divorce. On December 19, 2008, Ken Starr and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund filed legal briefs defending the constitutionality of Prop 8 and seeking to nullify the 18,000 same-sex marriages conducted between May and November of 2008.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in this case on March 5, 2009, with a decision expected within the next 90 days.

Watch the video and then go sign the letter to the State Supreme Court, telling them to invalidate Prop 8, reject Ken Starr and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund's case, and let loving committed couples marry.

The International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers - their purpose is to offer the world an increasingly scarce resource: earthly wisdom and prayer. An excerpt:
WE, THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF THIRTEEN INDIGENOUS GRANDMOTHERS, represent a global alliance of prayer, education and healing for our Mother Earth, all Her inhabitants, all the children, and for the next seven generations to come. We are deeply concerned with the unprecedented destruction of our Mother Earth and the destruction of indigenous ways of life. We believe the teachings of our ancestors will light our way through an uncertain future. We look to further our vision through the realization of projects that protect our diverse cultures: lands, medicines, language and ceremonial ways of prayer and through projects that educate and nurture our children.

Joss Whedon and Dr. Horrible and Internet Content Monetization (Oh My!)

Joss Whedon's Plan to Monetize Internet Content (Watch Out, Hollywood) - a couple of excerpts (it's a long article/interview):
We are now in such a homogenized, globalized, monopolized entertainment system where studios are swallowing all independent producers and productions. And they're swallowing each other. Eventually there will just be Gap films and McDonald's films. And that will be it.

The worst thing that's happened in this community is the death of the independent television producer. We have to make sure that that doesn't happen on what is, right now, a public forum, and not a privately owned forum.

Especially with the economic disaster that the last bunch of presidents has left us with, independent film production is shutting down. The film and television industry is finding itself in the position the music industry found itself in [a few years ago]. The difference is they have a chance not to do what the music industry did, which was to ossify and to basically lock themselves in their fortress until they ran out of food.

And...
The fact of the matter is, if somebody has a story to tell there is no reason at all that they should not be telling it. The quality of the material that exists -- I'm talking about the physical [equipment] like the cameras -- [allows you to do] things that could not be done when I was a kid for almost nothing.

People aren't going to the Internet to look for IMAX [large screen movies]. They're going to look for things that shock and delight and surprise and upset and all that good stuff. They're going for the most basic story.

A lot of people sit around and go, "How can I get this made?" The only answer is: By making it. By borrowing someone's camera. By buying a camera. They come cheap and they work well. And if you know where to point them -- and the person that you point them at is saying something interesting -- that's it! That's how it works.

BC Supreme Court Rules in Favour of Medical Marijuana - awesome news! An excerpt:
Compassion clubs and other medical marijuana distributors should have restrictions on them lifted, a B.C. Supreme Court judge ruled on Monday.

To the delight of a packed courtroom in Vancouver, Justice Marvyn Koenigsberg said federal regulations that limit people’s access to medicinal cannabis are “constitutionally invalid” and gave the government a year to amend the rules.

Watermelon Carving - seriously amazing. Here are just a couple:

The Simple Dollar - no need to write a description when there's a perfectly good existing one: "The Simple Dollar is for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds - we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money."
